Trinity Alps Vacation House, Trinity Center, CA

The owner of this cabin in the woods invited us to help him fulfill his unique vision: design each metalworked item as if it was made from an old object found in the area and left over from the gold mining days of the 1800s. We exceeded his expectations for the project. When delivered the railings with the large ring riveted to the post, the owner inquired about it. We responded: Why that was where the old settlers used to tie the bear up! Historic!

TRINITIES BBQ DOME, Trinity Alps vacation house, Trinity Center, CA 2001. JMM was invited to collaborate with the owner on every aspect of the metal fixtures in this cabin in the woods. The concept was to design each item as if it was made from some old thing that was found in the area, left over from the gold mining days of the 1800s. We delivered the railings with the large ring riveted to the post and when the owner asked about it, I told him that was where they used to tie the bear up in the 1800s!

We collaborated with Kristi Hanson Architects on this project. The owner instructed us to create things that would make him want to say, “Wow!” And so we did! The stairway is constructed of approximately 200 pieces of 1” square steel, forged and bent to form each step and balustrade. Artwork at the front entry is forged bronze attached to half-inch plate glass and serves as the door handle. Distinctive!

Squash Blossom Railing, Atherton CA

Forged from a combination of steel, copper and brass, this railing pays homage to Belgian architect, Victor Horta, while also musing on the squash flowers in local gardens. The site was an old pool house that had very eclectic lines, so it called for something that was equally original. Unique and whimsical!

DEWEY-GRILLEPrivate Residence, Atherton CA

According to Jefferson Mack, this was a design that literally drew itself after he taped a piece of white paper across the stairwell. The clients watched nervously as he pulled a large magic marker across the paper in swooping curves and squiggles and then announced: “This is what should be here!” Now they could not imagine the space without it! Size after completion: 8’ tall x 12’ wide. Inspired!

Holland/Yates Residence, Portola Valley CA

The owners wanted to us to use only recycled metal in keeping with their concept for creating “The Greenest House in America.” So we located some wrought iron tie bars from 1887 in a grain elevator in Wisconsin and made every metal item from this early iron: hardware, light fixtures, and table bases.  The vanity base is made from a discarded water heater and the sink is pounded out from an old piece of bronze. Exceptional!

Foundry Square Reception/Security Desk, SF CA

Commissioned by NY developer, Tishman Speyer, for an office building at 2nd & Howard Streets, the desk is constructed from ¼ inch plate steel that has been bead blasted and patina’ed to a rich rust finish. Designed to look like it is assembled from heavy 1-inch plate steel that was exposed to the elements for many years, it’s exquisite!
