Well maintained metal will last indefinitely. However, there are a few things to keep your piece at its best for years and years to come.
To clean your metal piece, we recommend that you only use a dry dust cloth. To clean the glass, apply a household glass cleaner to a paper towel and then wipe it on the glass. Do not spray the cleaner directly on the glass. Never use a chemical cleaning product on your fixtures.
Cover and protect your pieces extremely well (with plastic or other impermeable material) if you ever spray chemicals or cleaning agents around your exterior fixtures. This is especially true for power washing, which often utilizes bleach. Chemicals can significantly alter your fixture’s normal aging process and cause damage.
We recommend that you clean your exterior fixtures yearly, especially if you are in a high salt environment.
Because we usually coat our fine products with a linseed oil finish, they may rust if they are left outdoors. That’s why we recommend that you let us hot-dip galvanize the metal work that you want to use for exterior applications. Hot-dip galvanizing will prevent rusting.
To prevent rusting, apply boiled linseed oil from time to time, or when any signs of rust appear. Forged iron can be primed and painted.
If you have ordered fixtures in a “living” finish, the metal will acquire a patina, especially un-galvanized exterior installations. This is normal and to be expected.
